Who Is The Current Speaker Of The House?

The Speaker of the House is the leader of the House of Representatives and second in line after the vice president to replace the president in the case of a tragedy. Americans should be acquainted with the esteemed person put in this role. Recently, the power has changed hands from Democrat Nancy Pelosi to Republican Kevin McCarthy.

The House of Representatives: The Basics

The United States government is divided into three different branches: executive (the president), judicial, and legislative. The legislative branch is divided into two other branches: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate has 100 members (2 from each state). The House of Representatives has 435 members. The House of Representatives has more members in order to represent the population throughout the country evenly. Therefore, a populous state like New York or California has more representatives than Deleware or Vermont which only have one representative each.

Who Is the Speaker of the House?

While Americans vote on their representatives, the members of the House of Representatives elect a leader to become the Speaker of the House. As America runs on a bipartisan system, the party in power will likely elect one of their own to become the Speaker of the House.

The Speaker of the House speaks for the House of Representatives. More accurately, the Speaker of the House represents their political party. They also oversee administrative processes when the members of the House of Representatives are in session. This means they'll introduce talking points and announce decisions to the other members of the House of Representatives as well as the public. Of course, the Speaker of the House will also allow other members of the House of Representatives to oversee certain projects as it benefits the cause.

Kevin McCarthy

After 20 years of service, Nancy Pelosi no longer serves as Speaker of the House. The title now goes to Republican Kevin McCarthy. Kevin McCarthy comes from California's 20th district where he lived with his wife in Bakersfield, CA (before his move to Washington D.C.). While he represents Republicans, he works with Democratic President Joe Biden to manage government spending by limiting the national debt and frivolous red tape. He also aims to create new American jobs that can sustain a household.

Former Speaker of the House (from another party) Nancy Pelosi has voiced her admiration of Kevin McCarthy's diplomacy in the past - particularly in regard to foreign affairs. Hopefully, he will work with the president to bring change in America, too.
